Cracking Down on Meth Labs in Pennsylvania

A sheriff in Bradford County, Pennsylvania says the problem of home-made methamphetamines has reached epidemic proportions. Now Pennsylvania law enforcement officials are waging a full assault against the illegal drug just to keep up.

"There's been a lot of it lately, it seems around here. It's terrible," said Candy Kowalski. She lives across the street from a mobile home near New Albany in Bradford County, Pennsylvania. Police say it was the scene of a methamphetamine lab bust Sunday where four people were arrested.

"I worry because I have a seven year old son and I think this is going on and you don't even realize it," added Kowalski.

Just weeks ago a house just down the road was also raided. Inside, Pennsylvania police found a meth lab and two men. They're now facing drug charges. The cases, though almost next door, are unrelated.

"All you need to manufacture meth is some privacy. And in a rural area like Bradford County, we have lots of privacy," said Sheriff Steve Evans. He said meth, a highly-addictive drug that gives the user an intense rush, is easy and relatively cheap to make, not requiring much more than common household items.

"There's actually no heat required. You can literally use a bowl and a stick to accomplish the process," explained Evans. It's apparently such an issue, state police in the region have been distributing posters, urging retailers to look for tell-tale signs.

"We don't ask them to be police agents, but we ask them to watch for little details so we can follow up and go from there," said Pennsylvania State Trooper Bill Kelly.

The extra education is what Kowalsky wants to see. "You want to explain what's going on. But how can you, when you don't even know yourself what it's all about," said Kowalsky.
