Meth Moving Into The Northern Suburbs Of PennsylvaniaMethamphetamine is being seen in communities north of Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania with three possession busts reported since May in Cranberry Township alone, Channel 4's Ellen Gamble reported.
"It's moving fast," Cranberry police Lt. Jeff Schueler said. "We may see labs now, or in the spring we should be seeing it."
The Drug Enforcement Administration says it is seeing meth labs cropping up in Venangoand Crawford counties, Pennsylvaniaand the labs are moving south. In fact, the DEA says between 80 percent and 90 percent of the meth-lab meth-lab busts in Pennsylvania are happening in the northwestern part of the state.
Thirty-four busts were made at suspected meth labs in Pennsylvania in 2002, Gamble reported. The number has doubled to 63 this year.
Meth users and suppliers don't rely on deliveries. They cook their own stash using solvents, chemicals and over-the-counter drugs.
"If the individual is cooking methamphetamine and makes a mistake, he not only injures himself, but he can injure everybody around him," DEA agent Andy Petyak said. "It could explode. In an apartment building, that could be very dangerous."
Once a lab is found, cleanup efforts begin. The process isn't cheap, and tax dollars pay for it.
A team of Pennsylvania police officers, drug agents and chemists arrive at the scene in a special $180,000 truck -- one of two in the entire state. Cleanup at a small lab can cost between $3,000 and $5,000, while a large lab can run as high as $100,000.
What signs indicate that meth is being made?
A sweet, chemical smell coming from a neighbor's place.
Someone stockpiles large amounts of coffee filters, acetone, camp fuel, lye, cold pills and matches.
Local stores see mass quantities of those items being shoplifted.
"All communities have drugs, and you have to be aware of that," said Petyak. Drug Rehab by County
