State Rep Arrested On Drunk-Driving Charge in Pennsylvania

WILMINGTON, Pennsylvania - Six-term Pennsylvania state Rep. Thaddeus Kirkland was arrested on a drunken-driving charge Friday after an accident that injured a Delaware man, authorities said Monday.

Kirkland, D-Chester, said he had been dining with a friend at Harry's Savoy Grill shortly before the 8:30 p.m. collision. "I think it was poor judgment on my part, maybe having wine with my dinner," he said.

Kirkland, 48, the chairman of the Chester Democratic Party, was not injured and neither was his passenger. The other driver was taken to a hospital for treatment of a broken nose, Pennsylvania police said.

Pennsylvania state police did not release Kirkland's blood alcohol level. Delaware's blood-alcohol limit is .10 percent.

Kirkland is to be arraigned Jan. 7 on a charge of driving under the influence and failing to yield the right of way, Pennsylvania state police said. First time DUI offenders are eligible for a first-offense program that requires a course in alcohol awareness.
